Learn to fall and get up and try again

"Have you ever been frustrated by the number of times you fall while learning to snowboard"?

"Had your arms ripped out while trying to stand up while learning to wakeboard"?

"Fallen off every time you try to learn to surf"?

"Have you ever fallen off your bike while learning to ride a bike"?

Trying, falling and getting up and trying again is something that can be frustrating, but very normal, and yet we keep going when its something we really want.

Keep this in mind while you're learning a new way of being, and learning about yourself.

It might feel confusing or uncomfortable at the start. But these things will get easier and make more sense as you learn. Just remember each time you are starting something new, it will take trial and error - and sometimes it may take many times before you will pick it up. But starting to set in those neural pathways will create a new learned behaviour.

When we experience an error during a movement, we update our commands to partially correct for this error on the next trial. This works the same when it comes to learning a new behaviour or habit. We adapt and become capable of something new.

There is increasing evidence that the mesolimbic dopamine system (MDS) is critically involved in the processing of reward and reward-related learning.

Thorndike did an experiment where he placed a cat inside a box with a piece of fish on the outside.

The only way for the cat to get out of the box was to either push a lever or pull a loop. Initially the cat struggled around, until it accidentally pulled on the lever. It got out and was rewarded with the fish. The cat was then placed back inside the box, and this time took less time to pull the loop.

The exercise was repeated until a point when the cat took very little time to pull the loop to get out.

From this experiment along with others, the term 'Trial and Error learning" was introduced

Law of Use: If any action is repeated by an organism in a certain condition, learning occurs.

Law of Disuse: If the action is not repeated by an organism, there will be no learning.

What are you going to try doing that's new or different?
